(SEYMOUR) - A six-year effort to inventory the nearly 150,000 acres of woodlands in Indiana’s forests is now available online.
The Continuous Forest Inventory is designed to show how the state uses the woodlands, ensure that wood harvested meets national standards and show whether the state is cutting more wood than it's growing.
Program coordinator Joey Gallion tells The Tribune the inventory is based upon a random sample of more than 3,800 plots. The inventory shows tree growth exceeds timber harvest by at least a 2-to-1 margin.
Gallion says officials plan to survey about 20 percent of the original plots each year for five years and then update the inventory.
The inventory reports measurements on live and dead trees and identifies the most common invasive species.
