(CHICAGO-AP) - Ninety World War II veterans from Illinois were able to visit the World War II Memorial in Washington despite the partial government shutdown.
The veterans made the trip Wednesday with Honor Flight Chicago. Members of the Illinois delegation say the veterans were allowed in to the memorial after the National Park Service revised its policies under the shutdown.
U.S. Sens. Dick Durbin and Mark Kirk and U.S. Rep. Mike Quigley attended with the veterans.
Durbin said the Illinois veterans had no trouble getting into the memorial on the National Mall but nearby restrooms were locked because of the shutdown.
