(EVANSVILLE) - Police in Evansville say officers shot and killed a pit bull to stop the dog from attacking a bicyclist.
Police say a pack of five dogs attacked the 40-year-old man while he was riding on a street Wednesday east of the city's downtown.
Sgt. Jason Cullum tells the Evansville Courier & Press that all but one dog ran to a nearby yard when an officer tried to stop the attack. That officer fired a single shot into the dog to stop the attack.
Cullum says another officer shot the dog a second time to "end its suffering" as other officers tended to the injured man, who was taken to a hospital for treatment.
Cullum says the owners of the dogs could face charges.
