(INDIANAPOLIS) - Crews took at least one student to the hospital after a crash involving a Decatur Township school bus Monday morning.
The crash happened at 5925 S. Kentucky Avenue.
A Decatur Township official said the school bus carrying elementary school-aged students was pulled over to pick up children at the ABC Child Care and preschool. A vehicle traveling on northbound Kentucky Ave failed to stop and rear-ended the bus.
One child was transported for bump to the head. All the other students were checked on the scene. The bus was damaged and taken away from the scene.
"We had a bus that was traveling northbound on 67 this morning and was pulled off the side of the road to pick up students. At that point what we know is that a car that as heading northbound struck the bus on the rear end of the bus," said Nate Davis, assistant superintendent of schools for Decatur Township.
Davis said the car's rate of speed is still being investigated. The bus was damaged.
Approximately 25 students on the bus were checked out by medical personnel and returned to their school, West Newton Elementary, and their parents were contacted.
Davis said the school will provide counseling services and follow up in case the students need it. He also reminds drivers that state law requires them to stop when a school bus stops.
