(NASSAU, Bahamas) - Four people died when a private plane crashed in waters off the Bahamas Sunday morning. Records show the plane was registered to a company in Cicero, Indiana.
Names of the victims were not available, pending notification of relatives. Bahamas Police Superintendent Stephen Dean says the aircraft's four occupants "are believed to be Americans."
A report from the Bahamian Civil Aviation Department's Flight Standard Inspectorate posted on shows the Cirrus SR22 was registered to First Class Flyers, LLC, with the Indiana address.
The report went on to say the local sightseeing flight in the area of Freeport apparently ditched in low waters approximately seven miles north of the Freeport Control Tower.
Four people died, two males and two females. The pilot held a valid license for single engine aircraft.
The crash occurred around 11 a.m. about seven miles off Grand Bahama Island.
Police have identified one of the people who was killed as Fishers businessman Tony Wishart.
Wishart was the pilot of the plane.
Officials say Wishart radioed that the plane was "experiencing some engine problems" just minutes after takeoff.
Police officials have not yet released what caused the crash.
The weather at the time of the crash indicated light wind, broken clouds and visibility greater than ten miles.
