(EVANSVILLE) - An Evansville tax preparer who filed fraudulent tax claims will spend just over 3 years in federal prison.
61-year-old Steve Pirnat of Evansville was sentenced to 37 months in prison for filing the false claims to the IRS and costing taxpayers more than $222,000 in fraudulent tax returns.
From 2009-2011 he provided tax prep services in Vanderburgh County.
According to court documents however, he was not registered with the IRS so he would file all returns as "self-prepared."
In July of 2011, one of his clients was audited citing she needed to provide proof she had a dependent as listed on her 2010 tax return. She did not have any dependents and was unaware one had been listed. It wasn't listed on the copy of the return provided by Pirnat.
A recorded conversation between the two revealed he'd falsified the return to 'help out a lady he knew.'
After this incident, the IRS launched an investigation which led to several more discrepancies being discovered.
