(KOKOMO) - Indiana Governor Mike Pence is requesting a federal major disaster declaration for Howard County after tornadoes struck on November 17.
If granted, the federal money would include grants and low-interest loans for citizens and low-interest loans for businesses in Howard County, which suffered significant damage when severe storms and tornadoes tore through the area last month.
The governor says if Howard County is approved, he will consider requesting assistance for other counties "if damage warrants."
State and federal officials have released the following damage report for Howard County:
91 homes have sustained major damage or have been destroyed. In all, nearly 1,000 homes have sustained damage.
Indiana Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (VOADs) preliminary estimates more than $2.84 million will be needed for unmet needs in Howard County alone after a Presidential Major Disaster for individual assistance is declared.
Howard, Daviess, Fountain and Grant counties all have declared states of disaster emergencies.
