(INDIANAPOLIS) - An Indiana State Police Trooper escaped serious injury after his car was struck by a semi Saturday afternoon.
Just after 12:30 p.m., Trooper Chuck Meyer was investigating a crash on I-69 near the 267 mile marker. Trooper Meyer's vehicle was parked in the median, and its emergency lighting was activated to warn drivers to reduce their speed.
Meyer was out of his car speaking with the driver of the original crash when a second car slid into the median. While checking on the driver of the slide-off, a semi trailer slid off the road and into the median. Trooper Meyer was forced to dive over the median cable barrier to avoid being struck.
The truck was able to get back on the interstate and continued northbound on I-69.
As Trooper Meyer was reporting the incident over the radio, a second semi slid into the median. Meyer, who was standing outside his police car, was again forced to take evasive action to avoid being hit. The second truck, driven by 29-year-old Gabane Abdi of Minnesota, then struck Meyer's Dodge Charger.
Trooper Meyer was taken to the hospital with pain in the right side of his body. No one else was injured.
Neither alcohol or drugs is suspected in this crash. The interstate was wet and covered with snow at the time of the incident.
Abdi was cited for reckless driving.
