(UNDATED) - At least three people are confirmed dead in a massive highway pileup in northwest Indiana.
More than 40 vehicles, many of them semi-trailers, collided amid whiteout conditions on Interstate 94 near Michigan City. More than 20 others were injured. At least one person was trapped in a vehicle for hours.
Indiana State Police spokesperson Sergeant Ann Wojas says the accident investigation could take several weeks to complete.
Troopers hope to reopen eastbound I-94 sometime today.
Motorists were directed off I-94 onto State Road 49. I-94 westbound is open but State Police are still asking motorists to avoid the area if possible.
