(INDIANAPOLIS) - The Indianapolis Fraternal Order of Police has passed a three year contract agreement with the city of Indianapolis through the end of 2016.
The new contract passed with 82-percent approval and takes effect from January 1, 2014 to December 31, 2016.
FOP President Bill Owensby says IMPD officers have agreed to defer a three-percent pay increase until July of this year. Officers will also receive across-the-board pay increases in 2015 and 2016.
The FOP and the Department of Public Safety have also agreed to create and implement a minimum staffing model for IMPD and consider the feasibility of alternative shift schedules to ensure proper staffing levels that match peak service demand times.
Last year, Public Safety Director Troy Riggs said the city's 2014 budget allows for the hiring of 80 new police officers, 50 of which should be on street patrols by the end of this year.
Owensby says Riggs has promised to look at the possibility of additional hires if the city can afford it.
Owensby says the FOP's relationship with Riggs has been very positive and he has no doubts that Riggs will make every effort to hire as many officers as financially possible.
