(INDIANAPOLIS) - The next Indianapolis Mayor’s race will not include one of the more prominent names mentioned as a possible Democratic opponent for Mayor Greg Ballard. U.S. Attorney Joe Hogsett says he will not be a candidate for mayor.
Hogsett issued a brief statement through his office which read, "This is the best job I have ever had and I am proud of the Office's accomplishments over the last three years. I'm also keenly aware of the challenges that remain and the tasks still undone and I look forward to serving the remainder of my term in office working tirelessly to make this state a safer place for all Hoosiers."
Hogsett was appointed U.S. Attorney for the Southern district of Indiana by President Obama in 2010. He succeeded Susan Brooks, who won election to Congress in 2012.
Hogsett declined to comment further.
He has also been mentioned as a possible Democratic candidate for governor or for the seat of U.S. Senator Dan Coats in 2016. Hogsett lost a Senate race to Coats in 1992 and also lost a race for Congress to David McIntosh in 1994.
Hogsett does have one statewide elective office win - he was the last Democrat to serve as Indiana's Secretary of State.
