Man Credits Bird For Saving Him From Burning Home

Last updated on Wednesday, January 22, 2014

(AVILLA) - An Indiana man is crediting his tiny pet bird for waking him up in time to escape from his burning mobile home.

36-year-old Andy Hardiek says he was sleeping Monday afternoon after working the third shift at a factory when his cockatiel named Dylan started squawking.

He tells The News Sun that he first tried to use a fire extinguisher to put out the flames before fleeing with Dylan and his cage.

Avilla Fire Chief John Brazzell says he was still a block away when he saw smoke coming from the trailer in the town about 20 miles north of Fort Wayne. Brazzell blamed the fire on old heating tape around pipes and says the trailer is likely a total loss.
