(UNDATED) - Almost half of Indiana’s members of Congress are millionaires according to a new report.
The Center For Responsive Politics publishes the net worth of every member of Congress each year, at least an approximation based on the financial disclosure forms filed by members. As of 2012, the latest year studied, Republican Senator Dan Coats was the wealthiest member of Indiana's delegation, with an average net worth of $4.7 million. That ranks Coats 103rd out of the 535 members of the House and Senate.
Other millionaires in Indiana's delegation are Representative Susan Brooks (R, Carmel), with a $4.2 million average net worth, Rep. Pete Visclosky (D, Merrillville) at $1.3 million, Rep. Larry Buschon (R, Newburgh) at $1.1 million, and Rep. Marlin Stutzman (R, Howe) at $1.03 million. The least wealthy member of Congress in Indiana, and one of the least wealthy in the country, is Rep. Andre Carson (D, Indianapolis), with an average net worth of just $7,502.
The Center is a non-profit, non-partisan research group that compiles data on how money is spent in politics. For the first time, their survey showed that more than half of Congress are millionaires - 268 members as of 2012. The wealthiest member of Congress is California Congressman Darrell Issa (EYE-suh). The Republican had an average net worth of more than $464 million. Democratic members of Congress had a median net worth of $1.04 million compared to $1 million for Republican members.
