(JEFFERSONVILLE) - On Thursday, an Indiana woman who spent five months in a local jail despite being sentenced to only two days behind bars was finally released. Now, it turns out a second inmate served extra time in the same jail.
The News and Tribune reports Jason Ray O'Connor of Jeffersonville was released from the Clark County Jail on Friday after serving 215 days. He was ordered to spend 30 days behind bars last June.
A special judge ordered 34-year-old Destiny Hoffman released Thursday after she was sentenced to two days in jail but spent five months locked up because authorities say the court didn't issue an order needed to free her.
The News and Tribune reports the judge who sentenced Hoffman ordered her "held until further order of the court." But he never issued that order, resulting in her 154-day incarceration.
The Jeffersonville woman is a participant of the county's drug court treatment program and she was sentenced to 48 hours in jail for a program violation.
Both inmates had been sentenced to serve the sanctions by Clark Circuit Judge Jerry Jacobi.
Hoffman's attorney, Nathan Masingo, says he may file a civil suit against Clark County alleging his client was unlawfully incarcerated.
Attorney Larry Wilder, who has represented the court in other matters, says judges cannot comment on pending cases or ongoing investigations.
