(INDIANAPOLIS) - A new report out says tourism and its economic impact were up significantly in the Circle City in 2012.
The Rockport Analytics report shows that tourism in Indianapolis jumped to $4.4 billion in 2012 from $4 billion in 2011. It also says 2012 ushered in 26 million visitors. That's up from 25 million in 2011.
Much of that is due to Super Bowl 46 in January 2012 which the city hosted to the tune of $337 million in new tourism spending during the 14 days surrounding the event.
Visit Indy CEO Leonard Hoops says Indianapolis generated 44% of all tourism spending in the state. Visitor spending in Central Indiana topped $1 billion in tax receipts and $265 million in sales tax revenue.
Hoops says Visit Indy is launching a "tourism master plan" for Central Indiana this year. He says the Capital Improvement Board has given Visit Indy $178,000 for the plan. Hoops says it's all part of an effort to generate more tax revenue and create more jobs in Central Indiana by figuring out how to continually boost tourism.
