(INDIANAPOLIS) - Hoosier mental health professionals are taking part in a national effort to spotlight suicide prevention.
Community Health Network Licensed Mental Health Counselor Kimble Richardson says 95 percent of suicides are linked to disorders that include: depression, alcohol or drug abuse, bipolar disorder or schizophrenia. Richardson was among numerous professionals who took part in a Community Health Network symposium in Indianapolis Tuesday.
The "Zero Suicides in Healthcare" initiative aims to help the healthcare community provide better support for those at risk for suicide. Suicide prevention expert Dr. Mike Hogan says suicide is on the rise nationally. He cites the recession and the graying of baby boomers, especially men. Hogan says increased recognition of suicide as an issue is also a major factor. Overall, mental health professionals says perceptions about mental health are changing, but it largely remains taboo.
