(INDIANAPOLIS) - The state would study Indiana’s high rate of teen sexual assault if an amended bill wins passage.
An Indiana House committee amended a measure Wednesday to require at least two state agencies to look into teen sexual assaults. It would require the Commission on Improving the Status of Children in Indiana to study such crimes, and either the state health department or the Office of Women's Health to determine the number of victims of domestic and sexual violence.
The Centers for Disease Control report more than 17 percent of Indiana girls between grades 9 and 12 have reported being raped. That's compared to a national average of about 10 percent.
The amendment proposed by Rep. Christina Hale and Sen. Jim Merritt, both of Indianapolis, now goes before the full House.
