(INDIANAPOLIS) - The Marion County prosecutor’s office filed charges against a man accused of starving a dog to death.
Jonathan Dabner, 34, is charged with two counts of cruelty to an animal, one a felony, the other a misdemeanor.
According to a probable cause affidavit, Indianapolis Animal Care and Control responded to Dabner's home on Jan. 5 on a report of a dead dog in the back yard.
Court documents describe the dog as very emaciated with nearly every bone in the dog's body visible.
The probable cause affidavit alleges Dabner failed to provide food, veterinary care and left the dog outside in below-zero conditions.
The female pit bull found dead had a wound on her neck and Dabner said he went to two different vets for treatment, but could not afford thousands of dollars in treatment.
"When asked why Dabner did not take the dog to Indianapolis Animal Care and Control or attempt to contact IACC he said she would get better and then she wouldn't," read the report.
Officers did not locate any food in or near the dog house where the dead dog was found.
They found a five-gallon bucket of water but it was frozen solid.
Another male pit bull was found on the property in good condition.
Dabner is expected in court March 6 for an initial hearing.
