(TAYLORSVILLE) - One person is dead and another is in police custody following a standoff in Taylorsville.
It started around 8 pm Sunday night. Indiana State Police got a tip that a suspect wanted on an armed robbery warrant might be in Taylorsville.
State troopers joined Columbus Police and Bartholomew County Sheriff's deputies to search the area for the suspect's vehicle. Their search led them to the Red Roof Inn in Taylorsville, where the motel clerk identified one of the people as a motel guest who checked in earlier that evening.
Columbus Police SWAT officers responded, along with the Indiana State Police Emergency Response Team (ERT).
Just before 5 pm, the team made contact with the suspect. Zachary Baker, 26, of Waterford, MI, surrendered a short time later.
A second man, Baker's step-father, 44-year-old Richard Morris, of Waterford, MI., was not wanted on any warrants, but was confirmed to be a convicted serious violent felon in possession of a firearm.
Police got a warrant for his arrest, too, but he would not surrender. Just before 8:30 am, police heard a single gunshot from the motel room and found Morris dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
