(UNDATED) - The 2014 tax filing season is officially open. Internal Revenue Service Spokesman Luis Garcia says more than three million Hoosiers filed tax returns last year and 81 percent got refunds.
Garcia says it's always best to file early, especially if you owe. Garcia says those who owe have until April 15th to pay.
Garcia says the Affordable Care Act is not an issue this year. It won't be until next year because the law just took effect.
Garcia says one of every five Hoosiers isn't taking advantage of the earned income tax credit that can be worth up to $6100 if you're a family with more than three children. Garcia says the average refund is about $2700. He says people must investigate and find out if they qualify for the credit. He says the credit exists specifically for low income families.
Garcia says the IRS wants people to actually get the deductions and credits they're due. He says they're most concerned about fairness.
Garcia says there are trained, IRS certified tax form preparers available to prepare tax forms for free. He says more information is available at 1-800-906-9887 or you can contact the United Way.
Finally, Garcia says folks should be very careful about possible scam artists. He says the IRS does not send out email or make phone calls asking for personal information. He adds that they also don't threaten people with legal or criminal action over the phone. He says IRS agents carry cards and badges and operate in a professional manner.
