(NEWTON CO.) - A rural Newton County barn housing animals for the upcoming 4-H season was destroyed by fire Friday night.
According to Brook-Iroquois Township Volunteer Fire Chief Kyle Conrad, barn owners Ryan and Jennifer Kindig were at their home just west of Brook when the fire started. The fire killed 47 hogs and 5 goats. Many of the animals were to be used by in this year's 4-H projects.
Brook-Iroquois Township Volunteer Fire received the call for the barn fire just before 11 p.m. Automatic mutual aid was provided by the Kentland Volunteer Fire Department and additional assistance was requested for Goodland and Morocco fire departments. Newton County EMS was on standby at the scene alongside officers from the Brook police department and Newton County Sheriff's Department, our sister station WLFI reports.
Crews remained on scene until after 1 a.m. Saturday morning. Two Brook firefighters received minor injuries due to falls on the ice but did not receive medical attention.
