(DUBOIS CO.) - A driver traveling left of center on US 231 was at fault for a four vehicle crash Thursday afternoon that injured four people.
At approximately 12:54 p.m., 37-year-old Jonathan Shealey of Evansville was traveling northbound on US 231, approximately one-half mile north of Interstate 64. Shealey traveled left of center in his International tractor trailer and side-swiped a southbound tractor trailer driven by 21-year-old Knox A. Whitt of Attalla, Alabama.
Although Whitt attempted to leave the roadway in an effort to avoid striking Shealey's vehicle, the initial impact occurred with both truck striking mirrors. Shealey proceeded north, striking a rear axle on Whitt's trailer; Whitt eventually came to rest off of the roadway. Whitt suffered a minor head injury and was transported to Memorial Hospital in Jasper for treatment.
A gray Volkswagen Jetta, driven by 41-year-old Dionne Jo Hanselman of Mariah Hill was traveling southbound behind Whitt. Hanselman observed Shealey traveling left of center and attempted to leave the roadway to avoid striking Shealey. As a result, Hanselman drove through a ditch and struck a utility pole head on. Hanselman was not injured.
Shealey continued northbound, still left of center, and struck a white Oldsmobile Alero head on. The Oldsmobile, driven by 21-year-old Tiffany M. Vogler of Dupo, Illinois was traveling southbound behind Hanselman.
The force of the impact carried Vogler northbound, spinning the vehicle around facing north at its final resting position. Vogler had to be extricated from the vehicle by the St. Henry Fire Department due to the severity of the damage to the car. Vogler, her front seat passenger, 20-tear-old Thomas Vogler, Jr. of Dupo, IL and back seat passenger, 48-year-old Thomas Vogler, Sr. of Tilden, IL all suffered non-life threatening injuries and were transported to Memorial Hospital for treatment.
Further investigation and inspections of the commercial vehicles are being conducted by the Indiana State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division. Traffic charges are pending against Shealey for his involvement in the crash.
The Indiana State Police was assisted on scene by the Dubois County Sheriff's Department, St. Henry Fire Department, and Memorial Hospital EMS.
