(STATEHOUSE) - The House has narrowly approved the bill authorizing a mass transit referendum in central Indiana, setting up negotiations with the Senate on a final version.
The transit bill passed with just one vote to spare, though House sponsor Jerry Torr says other votes were available if needed.
He says government and business leaders in Marion and Hamilton County strongly support the bill, despite the local income tax hike it could lead to -- Torr says the planned expansion of the IndyGo bus system would make it easier for workers to get to their jobs.
Plans for the expansion would also stretch into slivers of Johnson and Hancock Counties. The bill would also authorize referenda in Madison and Delaware Counties, where leaders have expressed interest in eventually hooking into the transit network.
Torr says the Senate has made clear a clause limiting the transit expansion to bus service needs to be restored.
Other details need to be hammered out and brought to a final House and Senate vote before the legislature adjourns March 14.
