(SOUTH BEND) - Police in South Bend say a 2-year-old boy was fatally shot while playing in the front yard of a relative’s home.
The shooting happened Wednesday evening in a neighborhood a few blocks south from the University of Notre Dame campus.
St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Unit Lt. David Wells says the boy was playing outside with an older sister when he was shot in the chest.
The coroner's office identified the boy as John Swoveland Jr. No arrests were immediately made.
Wells says investigators were trying to determine whether the boy's shooting was related to a report of gunfire a couple blocks away about the same time.
Family members told reporters the boy and his 7-year-old sister were visiting their aunt when the shooting happened.
