(UNDATED) - An Indiana drug counselor calls the Food and Drug Administration’s approval of a new device a “home run” in the fight against drug overdoses.
The injection-style device called, "Evzio" is used to administer the drug naloxone. Naloxone reverses the effects of overdoses from heroin, opioids and prescription painkillers.
However, Scott Watson of Heartland Intervention says it shouldn't be used as an excuse to go ahead and use heroin.
Watson says IMPD, IFD and paramedics have already been using naloxone to save lives.
Ultimately, Watson says the goal should be to prevent drug abuse and overdoses from outset.
The Centers for Disease Control says 16,000 people died from opioid-related overdoses in 2010.
