(BARTHOLOMEW CO.) - Bartholomew County taxpayers could spend at least $40,000 for the public defense of murder suspect Samuel Sallee and attorney costs for the sentencing hearing of Ryan Klug, under a request approved last night by Bartholomew County Council.
Sallee is accused in the quadruple murder last Mother's Day weekend in Waynesville and is scheduled to go to trial in June. Klug pleaded guilty but mentally ill last week to killing his roommate in November.
Circuit Court Judge Stephen Heimann had originally requested $50,000 for the public defenders in what was expected to be two trials, but reduced the amount to $40,000 after Klug's plea bargain. Heimann said last week that the court would go after any assets the men have to pay for their defense, but neither man is expected to have many resources to tap into.
Any money not spent in the defense of the two men, would be returned to the county's general fund, Auditor Barb Hackman said.
