(ST. JOSEPH CO.) - One person is dead after a police chase and crash. No one noticed the crash until the sun came up Saturday morning. The man has been identified as 42-year-old Kevin Combs of South Bend.
According to WNDU, it all started around 1 a.m. with a police chase near Roosevelt Road and U.S. 31.
Officials say that a police officer was following a white Nissan 300 to get a plate read, when it turned into a chase down Roosevelt. As both vehicles turned onto U.S. 31, the officer crashed into a semi-truck. Both the driver of the semi and the officer suffered minor injuries.
Several hours later, the owner of the home in the 20000 block of Roosevelt Road called police, reporting that a car was in their backyard.
When St. Joseph County, South Bend and Mishawaka police responded to the scene, the white Nissan 300 from the early morning chase was found wrecked against a tree. And a few feet away, they found the body of Combs.
He had veered off the road, drove through fields and crashed into a tree, according to South Bend Police. The impact ejected the driver from the car and into the tree. The driver was reported dead on site.
Police are investigating the fatal accident. The victim has not yet been identified.
The Fatal Alcohol Crash Team is also investigating.
