(INDIANAPOLIS) -There’s a new multi-state effort underway to put a stop to those unwanted phone calls that so many of us get.
Indiana Attorney General Greg Zoeller has teamed up with Missouri's Attorney General to launch the first-ever national summit devoted to "Do Not Call" list. The summit was held Tuesday in Indianapolis to help state and federal agencies figure out the best way to protect consumers.
Advancements in technology have made it more difficult for authorities to fight back against harassing calls made by telemarketers or scammers. Especially when Zoeller says many of these calls come from overseas and those violators must be prosecuted at a federal level.
"The FCC has told me and others that they believe that it's people's right to free speech to make these massive amounts of calls," said Zoeller. "We're going to continue to argue our case that it's abuse of personal privacy instead of free speech."
"When these unwanted telephone calls come into a family home, it disturbs the evening, it disturbs the dinner hour and it makes people angry," added Missouri Attorney General Chris Koster.
Last year, Zoeller's office received more than 14,000 "Do Not Call" complaints. More than half of those involved automated calls known as "robocalls."
The top complaint in 2013 stemmed from calls offering credit services followed by home security and home improvement.
