(ELKHART) - Seventy people have filed a lawsuit against a northern Indiana medical facility, saying contaminated steroid injections caused them to contract fungal meningitis.
The Elkhart Truth reports that the lawsuit filed Wednesday in Elkhart Superior Court seeks unspecified damages against Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Center of Northern Indiana in Elkhart. The lawsuit alleges the facility should have known about conditions at a Massachusetts company linked to an outbreak of fungal meningitis that sickened about 750 people in 20 states.
OSMC spokeswoman Jaimie Wrigley says the facility believes the lawsuit lacks merit and that New England Compounding Center is at fault.
One plaintiff, Dawn Elliott, told WSBT-TV the company should have done a better job of ensuring the drugs were safe. She believes OSMC didn't do its homework.
