(HANCOCK CO.) - A 22-year-old New Palestine man died Monday night after being pulled from the water.
It happened near the New Palestine United Methodist Church in the 3500 block of South CR 500 West, near New Palestine.
The victim was identified as Zachary Wood, of New Palestine.
Officers say Wood went fishing at around 6:00 pm Monday. When he failed to return, his family members started looking for him and discovered him in the water.
Hancock County deputies were called to the scene and performed CPR. Wood was taken to Hancock Regional Hospital, where he later died.
The case is still under investigation and an autopsy is pending to determine the cause of death.
"As an agency, now that we're getting into warmer weather, we would like to stress safety around bodies of water. Retention ponds, those are likely going to be locations for outdoor activities, including with people fishing," DNR Officer Scott McDaniel said. "We just like to tell people to be safe around water. Certainly, if at all possible, to have a life jacket close by or something they can throw out to someone in trouble."
