(VERSAILLES) - 41-year-old Thomas A. Ball of Beach Grove is in critical condition after suffering a self inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
On Monday, around 3:45 p.m. the Ripley County Sheriff's Department and District 9 Conservation Officers received a call reference a possible armed suicidal man might be at the Versailles State Park.
Officers found Ball's vehicle in the parking lot of the Versailles State Park pool.
Officers then searched the area bike and hiking trails, the fishing area and the campground.
A Conservation Officer K-9 was deployed and could not find Ball. The search was suspended due to darkness and access to portions of the park were restricted temporarily to protect the public.
Around 7 a.m., Wednesday a man, fitting Ball's description was seen at the beach house restroom.
When Conservation Officers approached and asked for identification, the man, later identified as Ball, stepped back inside the restroom and then the officer heard a single gunshot.
Ball was still alive after suffering a single-gun shot to the head. First aid was administered and he was taken to the University of Cincinnati Hospital where he remains in critical condition.
This incident is still under investigation.
Agencies assisting at the scene were Ripley County Sheriff's Department, Versailles Fire and Rescue, Indiana State Police, Versailles State Park personnel and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources Law Enforcement Division.
Indiana Conservation Officers encourage the public to call their local City Police Department, County Sheriff Department, Indiana State Police Post or Indiana Conservation Officers Post to notify of any information related to suspicious activity.
