(LAKE STATION) - Lake Station’s mayor, his wife and a former city employee are facing federal corruption charges.
The 11-count grand jury indictment announced Wednesday alleges that Mayor Keith Soderquist and his wife Deborah conspired to commit wire fraud by taking cash for gambling at local casinos, including Four Winds Casino in Michigan, and other purposes from a campaign finance account and a city food pantry.
Deborah Soderquist helped out at the pantry while serving as an administrative assistant to her husband.
The grand jury also indicted former Lake Station city employee Miranda Brakley for allegedly stealing funds from the city and the Soderquists for allegedly helping her hide the theft.
Wednesday's indictments come after search warrants were executed last fall at Lake Station City Hall.
The Soderquists' attorney says his clients will enter not-guilty pleas in court today.
