(UNDATED) - With the April 15 tax deadline less than a week away, the United States Postal Service is reminding taxpayers to pay special attention to post office retail hours and collection box pick-up times.
Post offices in southern Indiana will be open regular business hours on April 15. Kiosk and collection box hours are generally posted at the facility, but can also be found at (800) 275-8777 or online at www.usps.com.
The majority of taxpayers now file online and the days of the mad rush to the post office are mostly gone. As of March 28, the IRS reported that 91 percent of all returns received by that date had been done electronically.
But still there will be a few procrastinators who wait until the last minute to file.
Here are some tips from the USPS to help make the rush a little easier:
If depositing returns in a blue collection box on April 15, double-check the pick-up schedule on the label. To ensure getting an April 15 postmark, deposit returns before the last scheduled pickup.
Affix the appropriate postage, especially since the item may weigh more than an ounce. The IRS will not pay postage due and your filings will be returned if there is insufficient postage. The cost of a one-ounce letter is 49 cents.
Be sure to include a return address on the envelope. Short-paid items without a return address will be sent to the postal mail recovery office for determination of the sender, delaying the return.
The USPS highly recommends getting the security of proof of mailing and proof of delivery of tax returns -- use certified mail service with a return receipt, plus the applicable postage.
Tax forms are no longer available at post offices. Check online at www.irs.gov (federal forms) or www.in.gov/dor/3489.htm (Indiana forms).
The postal service does not receive tax dollars for operating expenses; it relies entirely on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations.
