(INDIANAPOLIS) - A father fell asleep Monday night and awoke to find his 3-year-old son missing. He later found the boy unresponsive in a retention pond near their south side apartment, police say.
According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, officers responded to the 100 block of Waterbury Road around 10 p.m. in response to reports of a missing child.
Kassandra Wilson told FOX59 that she came home and realized her son Braedyn wasn't in their apartment. She woke up her husband, Nick, and reported their son missing. Kassandra said Braedyn got out through the front door of their apartment and believes Nick left the door unlocked for her when she came home from school. The back porch fence was secured with a padlock so Braedyn couldn't get out.
She told FOX59 that her son had even taken his socks off and left them behind so they wouldn't get wet when he went outside.
According to IMPD, Nick found Braedyn in a nearby retention pond. A neighbor performed CPR until emergency crews could arrive to help. Doctors couldn't revive the boy, who later died at Community South Hospital.
The family is calling for prayers from the public and said parents should make sure to hug their children.
