(JASPER CO.) - Three people are dead after a crash involving a semi and an SUV on Interstate 65 in Jasper County Tuesday morning.
The crash happened at 12:39 a.m., when an SUV driven by Dr. Mallik Chaganti, 45, of Rensselaer, Ind. rear ended a semi. The trailer was stopped on I-65 southbound because of a crash that had happened about three miles ahead earlier Monday evening.
The impact killed Chaganti and his son and daughter that were passengers in the vehicle. A third passenger, a young boy believed to be Chaganti's son, was injured in the crash. He had to be extricated from the vehicle and was transported to Jasper Memorial Hospital with what appears to be non-life threatening injuries.
The driver of the semi was not injured.
The trailer received damage to the rear and was towed from the scene. The SUV was a total loss.
Neither alcohol nor drugs are suspected of being contributing factors to the crash. ISP said the investigation is ongoing.
Authorities said the names of the children will be released by the Coroner's Office when proper identification is made.
