(TIPPECANOE CO.) - Two children were killed in a house fire Saturday in Tippecanoe County.
Deputies were able to find 3-year-old twins Landon Abbot and Liam Abbot unconscious in a first-floor bedroom around 11:00 Saturday morning and carry them out of the burning home in the 10700 block of Brandy Kay Court. They were immediately taken to an area hospital, but later died.
"It's every first responders worst nightmare," said Tippecanoe County Sheriffs Department Detective Lieutenant Jason Huber.
The boys' father, 31-year-old Brandon Abbott, and Nicole L. Thomas were also inside at the time. Rescuers found them on the front lawn with injuries from the fire. Both were taken to hospitals to be treated, but Brandon left as soon as he heard about his sons. On Friday night, Thomas was still being treated at an Indianapolis hospital for burns and smoke inhalation and was listed in serious condition.
Investigators are not yet sure how the adults were able to escape while the boys weren't.
The boys' biological mother was not at the house at the time.
Investigators are looking into the cause of the fire and the children's deaths, but said that could take a month. Autopsies are scheduled for Landon and Liam on Monday.
