(UNDATED) - Indiana will not get federal help to reimburse local governments for spending on the severe winter storm just after the new year began.
Indiana's Department of Homeland Security says it was told by the Federal Emergency Management Agency that the state's request for disaster assistance for the storms that occurred January 5-9 was denied.
In a statement emailed to reporters, the department said it would appeal the decision.
Indiana submitted the request March 6, asking for help for governments and certain non-profits in 49 counties. The state was looking for public assistance grants that would have covered 75-percent of expenses, including the removal of snow and debris, search and rescue and damage to buildings and equipment.
The storm featured the second-largest single-day snowfall on record in Indianapolis, followed by sub-zero temperatures for much of the week, shutting down governments and schools across much of the state.
