(INDIANAPOLIS) - Volunteers and others have collected more than 15,000 bags of trash and debris from along Indiana highways.
The Indiana Department of Transportation says Adopt-a-Highway volunteers whose signs are familiar sights along Indiana roads, along with Indiana Department of Correction offenders and highway department workers, collected 16,500 bags of trash from along 1,480 miles of road during the annual Trash Bash in April.
The trash collected amounted to 9,300 cubic yards of debris.
The highway department has coordinated the Trash Bash since 1997 in order to give the state's highways a spring cleaning.
The department also sponsors a similar volunteer program for Indianapolis area interstates.
Transportation officials urge drivers to toss trash into a bag inside their vehicles, not out their car windows.
