(INDIANAPOLIS) - The Indianapolis Metro Police Department is investigating a fatal shooting in the 1200 block of S. Girls School Road.
It happened about 3:30 a.m. Saturday morning at Sully's Bar and Grill.
Officials say the incident started as a fight inside. Several men were escorted out of the bar due to the fighting.
Once outside in the parking lot, one man pulled a gun and shot and killed another man.
The suspect turned himself in Saturday afternoon at The Harvest Christian Fellowship Church off of East 25th Street
"He had a conversation with his parents and I think that members of his family talked to him about turning himself in and I think there was probably concern too about his own safety," said Rev. Charles Harrison with the Ten Point Coalition.
25-year-old Devin Brookins came to the church with his family. The minister called Rev. Harrison who worked with IMPD to arrange the peaceful arrest.
"It troubled him enough that I think he wanted to do the right thing and I think the conversation he had with clergy and his own family was to let the courts decide what happened and whether it was a justifiable homicide or whether there was intent," he said.
Police found 34-year-old Michael Willoughby's dead in the parking lot of Sully's Bar and Grill.
Investigators say a fight broke out inside the bar and several men were escorted outside.
A short time later investigators believe Brookins shot and killed Willoughby.
"I think a lot of these young people, when they have that gun, they think they are invisible, and when they get in that conversation because they have that, I think it sometimes takes them further than they really wanted to go," Rev. Harrison said.
Rev. Harrison says while the crime itself is disturbing, there's perhaps comfort that Brookins turned himself in.
"Little by little we're beginning to make some gains out there and we're starting to reach some of these young people and if we do it one at a time we make gains and if we continue doing what we're doing I think we're going to reach more and more young people and we're going to turn this thing around," he said.
