(UNDATED) - They’re popping up all over the place and stressing out many Indiana homeowners. How do you get rid of dandelions?
Pat Sullivan of Sullivan's Hardware says spring is the perfect time for weeds and there's no way around it; dandelions are a lot of work.
Organic methods tend to be sketchy. Sullivans says spot treatment weed killers tend to work best on dandelions. He says the best time to control weeds is fall.
Sullivan adds that while spot treatment is effective, you'll likely have to go back and re-treat the same area come fall. He says that will prevent weeds next spring.
Sullivan says it makes no sense to treat entire lawns with weed killer if there are no weeds. Ultimately, he says spot treatment is best for killing weeds and preserving the environment.
Over-seeding your lawn is okay, but you really have to kill the weeds first and plant grass months later.
Finally, Sullivan says thicker, slightly higher-cut lawns - two to three inches as opposed to one inch - have fewer weed issues.
