(COLUMBUS) - A Columbus man was arrested after allegedly leaving his child locked in an SUV that was up to 124 degrees inside.
Lt. Matt Myers, spokesman for Columbus Police Department, says the police were called to the eastside Walmart just before 3:30 p.m. Monday on a report of a child locked in a vehicle. Officers discovered a child screaming, crying and sweating inside of a vehicle in the parking lot. Officers opened up the SUV and pulled the child out. The temperature outside was 89 degrees and officers estimated the temperature in the truck was more than 120 degrees.
Witnesses said the five-year-old child had been locked inside for more than 20 minutes.
The child was treated by Columbus Regional Hospital paramedics and Child Protective Services is assisting in the investigation. The child was released to the mother.
38-year-old Jesus Dubon-Nataren, the child's father, was found in the store and arrested on a preliminary charge of neglect of a dependent. That's a Class D felony.
