(INDIANAPOLIS) - The latest studies show that cardiovascular disease - not fires - is the leading cause of death for firefighters.
Nearly half of all firefighter fatalities are due to heart attacks. That's eight times more than deaths due to smoke inhalation.
That's why the Indianapolis Fire Department is taking part in a first of its kind IU Health and Harvard University School of Public Health study.
The study involves taking 3-D images of the hearts of firefighters who take part. The purpose is to measure and monitor for signs of cardiovascular disease.
