(UNDATED) - As millions of Americans hit the road this holiday weekend, there are some ways to get better gas mileage.
James Bell with Consumer Affairs of General Motors says take out all the stuff you used in the winter out of your car. Bell says shovels, sandbags and other items make the vehicle heavier, which in turn hurts your gas mileage.
Bell says to also check tire pressure before hitting the road. He adds to check the tire pressure only on cold tires, he says if you drive somewhere to check the pressure, the reading will be off since the tires are warm.
AAA expects over 36 million people to travel over 50 miles by car this holiday weekend.
