(JOHNSON CO.) - An inmate housed in the Johnson County Jail died over the weekend.
Johnson County Sheriff Doug Cox says that 42-year-old James Wilkerson of Greenwood passed away Saturday at Johnson County Memorial Hospital. Cox reports that Wilkerson, who had been housed at the jail since April 29 on a felony drug dealing charge, was found unconscious in his cell at approximately 4:50 p.m. on May 13. Police say he had swallowed a large quantity of toilet paper in an attempt to commit suicide.
Sheriff Cox says that jailers, medics and Franklin Fire Department members worked to resuscitate Williams, but were unsuccessful. Williams was rushed to the Johnson County Memorial Hospital Emergency Room. From there, he was moved to the hospital's critical care unit where he later died.
Jail staff reported conversing with Wilkerson about ten minutes before his body was discovered. They added that Wilkerson was in a cell by himself.
Sheriff Cox says that an autopsy was performed on Wilkerson Monday, but the results can only be released by the Johnson County Coroner. Calls to the Coroner's officer were not returned.
