(SAINT PAUL) - A Cincinnati man died Thursday at White Rock Park in Shelby County after diving off a 30-foot platform.
Cory Norrod with the Department of Natural Resources says 30-year-old Ryan Hester was at the park in Saint Paul, Indiana with a friend. He says visitors are supposed to jump off the platform one at a time, feet first, but Hester and his friend decided to jump together.
Norrod says something happened to Hester's posture and he hit the water awkwardly. Hester's friend came up from the water after three-to-five seconds but Hester did not. The friend attempted several times unsuccessfully to locate Hester under the water then called 911 for help.
Scuba divers found Hester's body in the water about an hour and 40 minutes after his friend made the call.
Norrod says Hester's death is preliminarily being ruled as a drowning but an autopsy will be performed Friday to determine an exact cause of death.
