(INDIANAPOLIS) - Hundreds of people honored a man Sunday night who was killed last month while riding his bicycle to work.
A memorial ride and fundraiser began at 3 p.m. Sunday to benefit the family of Neil Kelty, 23. Among those in attendance was Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard.
Kelty frequently commuted to his job as a product manager at Perq Marketing on his bike. He had his lights on and was wearing a helmet when he was struck by a school bus near Ditch and Westlane roads April 24.
Police said they don't think speed or alcohol played a role in the crash.
Kelty's father, Rich Kelty, said he was humbled by the turnout for the ride.
"I mean these people took time out of their day, but I think they all just love cycling," Rich Kelty said. "He loved cycling."
Kelty's mother Sandy said Neil "never knew a non-friend."
"He cared about everybody, and genuinely," she said. "He was bright but he didn't let that interfere with anyone on the continuum of life. He wanted to help everybody move forward in a positive way."
Kelty graduated with honors from the Kelly School of Business at Indiana University two years ago and was supposed to get married this fall.
Kelty's friends hosted the memorial ride along his route to work as a way to pay tribute to the man and raise money for his fiance and family.
For every bike rider who takes part, Perq Marketing pledged to donate $5 to a foundation in Kelty's name.
