(KOUTS) - Officials say a police officer left his loaded handgun behind in a staff restroom of a rural northwestern Indiana school.
East Porter County Schools superintendent Rod Gardin says the school resource officer removed the gun while using the restroom and didn't retrieve it before responding to an emergency text message.
Gardin tells The Times of Munster that a teacher at Morgan Township School near the town of Kouts found the gun inside the locked restroom Tuesday in its elementary/middle school section.
Kouts Police Chief Jim Smith says the officer faces disciplinary action according to police department policy and will remain a school resource officer.
Gardin says no students at the school about 20 miles southeast of Gary came in contact with the gun.
