(INDIANAPOLIS) - Metro Police chased and shot a robbery suspect on Interstate 465 early Tuesday morning. The Interstate was closed until 6:30 a.m. near the shooting scene, just south of the Washington Street exit.
Police say the incident began with a robbery call from the McClure gas station in the 5300 block of Rockville Road at 1:49 a.m. Two suspects fled onto I-465, were chased, stopped, and one was shot by police as he tried to run away.
IMPD spokesman Lt. Christopher Bailey said nobody was hurt in the robbery, or the chase, which began when officers spotted and stopped the suspect vehicle in the 2400 block of S. Lynhurst. Officers said the suspect car fled the stop, going south on Lynhurst, turning west on Washington to I-465, then southbound on the Interstate until a "pit" car was able to catch up and bump the car, sending it into a spin.
Bailey said police caught the driver on the roadway, but his passenger fled, carrying a handgun. Police fired shots at the suspect, who ran across the northbound lanes. He was struck by police fire and and collapsed on the east side of I-465 on Lawndale Ave, just south of where Minnesota Street reaches a dead end at I-465.
The suspect was taken to Eskenazi Hospital in serious condition, but his wounds were not expected to by life-threatening, according to Bailey.
Bailey described the robbery suspects as in their late twenties. He said nobody at the McClure station was injured as the would-be thieves escaped with cigarettes and no money.
Bailey said police have recovered a gun and evidence from the robbery scene.
Southbound traffic was diverting at Washington Street, while northbound traffic was getting off at the Sam Jones Expressway. The closure is expected to last several hours while crime lab technicians and ballistics investigators process the scene.
