(INDIANAPOLIS) - A new study links longer recovery time from concussions in athletes to possible psychiatric conditions.
Researchers at St. Vincent Sports Performance monitored 76 athletes ages 8-23 who were referred for neuropsychological evaluation more than four months after sports-related concussions.
They found that almost 74% of those athletes met formal criteria for disorders like attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, anxiety, learning disabilities and depression. They found that such conditions complicate treatment.
The study concludes more research is needed, but advises that athletes with prolonged recovery from concussions also receive neuropsychological evaluations.
A Purdue University professor will share his research on sports concussions with President Obama today.
Eric Nauman was invited to the Youth Sports Concussion Summit at the White House. The event is bringing together the nation's top experts to jumpstart efforts to mitigate the problem of head injuries in youth sports.
Nauman has invented new helmet technology that reduces G Force to the brain by 50 percent.
