(UNDATED) - The Transportation Security Administration says 165,000 people in 230 centers across the U.S. have already signed up for TSA Pre-Check.
Indianapolis International Airport was one of the test spots for the new registered traveler program that kicked off last December.
TSA Spokesman Mark Howell says it's designed to speed travelers through airport security. Howell says people identified as "low risk" can use the Pre-Check lanes that allow them to keep on their jackets, belts and shoes and they don't have to remove their laptops from their bags.
Howell says the goal is to create more Pre-Check lanes at all airports.
The program requires folks to submit to a background check (with drivers license and passport or birth certificate with proper seal) and pay $85 for a five-year, renewable membership.
Approved travelers get a registration number that they use to book all flights. Howell says that number shows up on boarding passes.
